Internalities. Architectures for Territorial Equilibrium Pavilion of Spain — Biennale Architettura 2025
Interview with Roi Salgueiro and Manuel Bouzas
At the 19th Venice Biennale, the Spanish pavilion Internalities overturns the logic of environmental externalities: an exhibition in five sections that proposes architecture capable of decarbonising the built environment, redefining production and distribution processes through local and responsible practices.
The project for the Spanish Pavilion at the 19th Venice Biennale is entitled Internalities. Architectures for Territorial Equilibrium actively questions the processes associated with reducing emissions from the extraction, production, distribution, installation and demolition of the architecture in which we live. The exhibition revolves around the term "internalities", a concept coined for this project that is placed in opposition to the existing term "externalities". Adopting a new term highlights the potential for architects to address the environmental issues associated with traditional architectural practices and decarbonise the construction sector. In an interview with Graziella Zannone, architects Roi Salgueiro and Manuel Bouzas discuss their experience of the project and the five sections into which the pavilion is divided: Materials, Emissions, Trades, Waste and Energy. These sections bring together all the regions of Spain in a collective discourse, showing how it is possible to move away from hegemonic models of architectural construction and economies based on externalisation.
